Come and learn how to build highly-available Microsoft SQL Server solutions from industry experts. We will cover everything you need to know to setup, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot high-availability solutions using Microsoft SQL Server. Add real-world operational and design experience with Fortune 500 environments from published authors and you will see what it takes to build truly rock solid SQL availability. The seminar will be heavily focused on demos and hands on time with the products. While no PCs are provided, you will be given the materials and requirements you will need to setup the tests on a laptop. Feel free to bring your own machine and follow along.

The speakers at this seminar will be Eric Johnson and Josh Jones. Eric Johnson, a DBA of 10 years with Fortune 500 companies, has delivered many high availability solutions and has a strong consulting and writing background. His recent publishings include the four part cover series “Tour de SQL” for Redmond Magazine and an upcoming book on SQL Server database modeling for Addison-Wesley which is expected later this year. He has been involved with PASS (Professional Association for SQL Server) events and speaking engagements at national conferences such as TechMentor. Josh Jones has delivered high-end SQL Server solutions for insurance, medical, and financial companies. He has published articles in Redmond Magazine including “Keep Tabs on SQL Server”, he is also co-authoring the afore-mentioned database modeling book, as well as two other technical reference books for Sybex Inc. He has spoken at Colorado PASS Camp as well as donated knowledge and time through SQL user group presentations.

Agenda

SQL Server Clustering
Clusters are the heart of many high-availability solutions, but they can also experience failures at the least opportune moment. Hear about the trials and tribulations of configuring a cluster and learn what you can do to avoid the pitfalls. We will cover, cluster configuration, MSDTC, security recommendations, monitoring, and troubleshooting real world cluster failures.

Database Mirroring
New to SQL Server 2005, database mirroring provides a new mechanism for creating highly available SQL Server database solutions. We will look at this new technology in detail, covering configuration of the Primary, Witness and Mirror servers and how to establish automatic failover. We will also look at the additional steps outside of database mirroring that you must take in order to build a true failover solution.

Log Shipping
One of the most overlooked high availability solutions is Log Shipping. We will go over the pros and cons of this method and show you how to make the most of it. We will cover configuration, maintenance, monitoring, integration into a backup strategy, and 3rd party backup integration. Additionally, will we look in detail at the extra steps required to recover from a failure when using a log shipping solution.

Replication
Since its release, replication has been the subject of much debate. Its use as a high availability solution has always been questioned by Database Administrators. We will focus on options for configuring High Availability with replication and look at the situations in which it is appropriate to use it. The conversation will focus on transactional replication, peer-to-peer replication, and on some custom replication solutions that you can build. Additionally, we will look at ways you can monitor your replication environment for problems and the type of problems you are likely to encounter.

Monitor The Solution
The worst call you can get is from your boss wondering why the business is offline. Even worse is having no answer. In each of the topic areas, you will learn how you can stay on top of your environment. Move beyond mere server uptime and know when key components like query performance, site affinity, and cluster health are at risk before anyone even notices.

Disaster Recovery
A buzzword thrown about by the industry, disaster recovery seems to lose its meaning at a technical level. Understand what SQL needs to be bulletproof and how to integrate your requirements into an organization's overall disaster recovery plan. We will cover methods and strategies you can use to incorporate all of the high availability solutions into your business's disaster recovery model. Hopefully, a disaster never occurs, but you will learn how to recovery quickly in the event that one does.
